A Thorough Overview and Application Guide of NP

Not a bad book, considering it gives you the fundamentals of a variety of topics well covered in network programming. It is the only source of its kind I have found to address network programming without being almost exclusively tied to web development. I looked at it in light of it's C# orientation (because I'm a VB.NET developer), and found a lot of good basic coverage. Bewarned: If you are not an intermediate programmer, whether C# or VB.NET, it will take a little to get up to speed. The style is not bad - surprising, given the number of authors, and you CAN learn from it. I give it actually a 4.2-4.5, but I can't give it quite the 5-star rating. :-P

Back to basics

There is a classic series, "Internetworking with TCP/IP" by Comer and Stevens (1991) that describes the Internet of that time. Just before the Web burst on the scene. The books have C code that show how to perform network programming.

Well, this .NET book reminds me very much of that series. To good approximation, the authors have covered the same functionality. But now using the .NET environment as a development platform. The language is fully object oriented, unlike C. Much of the book is taken up with showing how the default libraries/classes that deal with networking.

If you have indeed used C and Comer and Stevens for networking, then you should appreciate what this book does. It gives a far richer vocabulary of prebuilt functionality, to handle those tedious and error prone low level manipulations. These libraries mimic what Java also offers for network programming. So if you are migrating from Java, there is much common ground here.

The book takes you back to the basics of network understanding. No pretty but vapid GUI to obscure the concepts. The UI, so to speak, is stdout and stdin and the filesystem. Before the Web and the browser metaphor became prevalent, this is how most of us programmed.

Another merit of the book is its coverage of IPv6. Still fairly new. But you can start familiarising yourself here. The authors also find space for brief explanations of cryptographic methods in .NET.

Must-have read for working with protocols in .NET

I was really surprised at the ease of reading with this book offered. As it seems to be one of the last remaining books left over from the old Wrox days, the "Pro" in the title would denote a very high level of material, often assuming a great deal of talent on the part of the reader and skipping the necessary introductory concepts and giving piecemeal code samples. This totally isn't that way at all. The book's back cover lists it as "Beginner/Intermediate" and it delivers on its promise.



Put it this way - I'm a lifelong web dev who's been doing more and more client/server work, and I got a ton of useful information for my projects in this work. Even as the book starts to get into material for which there is no easy way of describing, the authors don't deviate from using simple English and practical, plainclothes, repetitive examples to ensure the readers gets it before progressing to more in-depth topics.



Principal author Christian Nagel (whose writing I've long appreciated) starts out with a very thorough rundown of basic networking concept, the OSI model and the TCP/IP protocol stack, that any IT professional should peruse as a primer. He then presents the particulars of network programming in .NET, such as working with streams and sockets, and then drills down into individual protocols, devoting a chapter each to the major forms of network communication. The major protocols for communicating over networks and the Internet are all examined and expanded upon - SNMP, TCP, UDP, SMTP, HTTP, with helpful code samples. The book also briefs the reader on the importance of .NET Remoting on more than one occasion.



The book isn't one that's filled to the brim with code snippets you can instantly plug into your applications, but there are several very nice demonstrations and couple good sample apps (an FTP client, a multicast chat app, a simple e-mail utility, a picture viewer, etc.) that demonstrate the high-level concepts in the book's latter chapters.



In criticism, I found Chapter 5 - "Raw Socket Programming" was obviously written by a different author and uses a slightly different coding convention. While it's not an incriminating factor that should detract one from buying this book, it is something I would hope the editors would look to change for the next version, as the difference between the book's majority voicing and this one chapter - namely in its use of grammar and syntactical layout is a little too painfully obvious.



I also enjoyed the chapter introducing the reader to working with IPv6, although I thought it might have been better suited for placement further into the book or as an appendix, and not in Chapter 6. Additionally, I would have wished for more samples featuring using peer-to-peer networking architecture (there was one, I think), and a bit more meat to the discussion of .NET Remoting, perhaps in its own chapter.



But semantics notwithstanding, this is an outstanding title, being well-written and covering all the major considerations of .NET network programming with. This is easily a 5/5 work.

The incident leaves Lily's understanding of the world chaotically ripped open. She learns that Regan is the Guardian of the Gates and that there is an old and new city of London. Dark beings known as the Chaos are "upsetting the balance" between old and new, and supernatural monsters are flooding London, attacking a small number of girls, and causing harm. To restore the balance, Lily helps Regan as layers of his world continue to unfold. Along the way, Lily discovers connections between her and Regan's world while developing a romantic relationship with him. Inglis blends light romance and urban fantasy with a touch of science-fiction. This action-packed work lacks thorough development of the fantasy world and an emotional connection to Lily. The plot is somewhat clunky and murky, and the characters don't feel fully formed. Still, the action and twists are enough to keep some readers engaged. The book ends wide open to the possibility of a sequel, which could potentially level out the story in future installments. Harry Potter fans will love this novel! It is twisty, brilliant and an extraordinary book with two- headed dogs and more!

When girls start to go missing in the City of London, Lily needs to find out once and for all who keeps taking the girls. Lily suddenly meets a boy named Regan, while she is getting attacked by banddogges (two-headed dogs). She realizes she is in a world with not only humans, but a lot more!

This book was fast-paced and a fun read.

Very enjoyable....except

I have read a fair amount of transvestite literature and much of it is really so so...and a fair amount is bad despite what their reviews might say. Sara Desmarais and Anne Michelle stand tall and high above the others. First, they are plain very good writers. Secondly, they know their subject. They obviously know how to talk the talk and walk the walk. Thirdly, they are nuanced... just right. The twists and mind games of Anne Michelle are very engaging and develop the plots well. I prefer Anne slightly over Sara because she moves along more quickly. She can carry alot of action in just a few pages. However, I have two 'knocks' on Anne Michelle. Firstly, only three books? ANNE?..go to the salon a little less girl and write some more books. And, secondly, I become involved with Anne's characters and I wish her books were longer, or became a series. I would like to see the characters become even more complex, even more realistic, and evolve. I want to know more about what they did, or became, after the last page of her books.

Exquisitely humiliating and wickedly funny

I have written lengthier reviews of 3 other books by Ann Michelle, so I will keep this one short. I love "Humiliation at the Office" for the same reasons I love her other books.

I was a bit reluctant to buy this one because I didn't see how "forced feminization" could be plausibly carried out in an office environment. However, the story is so well-written that I suspended my disbelief and enjoyed the story "as though" it really could happen (which, of course, it couldn't).

The humiliations the male protagonist suffers are just exquisite, and the twists and turns of the plot as the females at the office put a once arrogant, male chauvinst through the wringers are laugh-out-loud funny. I read the whole book in one sitting, amused and aroused the whole time.

Amusement and arousal is a very sexy combination!

This is a brilliant and excellent story that is extremely well written with creativity and style. This story had me glued to every word, but the fantastic twist at the end put this story in my list of favorite erotic stories. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys erotic fiction!

Great Book!!

Great Book! Probably one of the first to buy it!! I just wish they made it a little bigger so it had bigger font! Also they have all the guidelines and step by step as too what you can encounter. Only thing I would wish is that if they explained the calculations a little more detailed! Aside from that it's a great book!! I passed my exam! On my exam it was mostly the Federal agencies and OSHA ... 10-20 calculations on Pills and Suspensions also brush up on your Sigs like ss = 1/2 ... Brand to generic but as to what they do or cure... Mostly it was like Lisinopril... Omeprazole Etc... Brush up on the entire body of the needle and laminar hoods and as to how long to keep them on!

About the Author

Paolo Corti

Paolo Corti is based in Rome, Italy. He is an environmental engineer with more than 15 years of experience in the GIS sector. After working with proprietary solutions for some years, he has proudly switched to opensource technologies and Python for almost a decade. He has been working as a developer and analyst for organizations such as the EU Joint Research Center, UN World Food Program, and the Italian Government. Currently, he is working within the GeoNode project, for which he is a core developer, in the context of emergency preparedness and response. He is an OSGeo Charter member and writes a blog on opensource GIS at http://www.paolocorti.net/. He is the author of the book's chapters 1, 3, 8, and 9.

Thomas J. Kraft

Thomas J. Kraft is currently a Planning Technician at Cleveland Metroparks after beginning as a GIS intern in 2011. He graduated with Honors from Cleveland State University in 2012, majoring in Environmental Science with an emphasis on GIS. When not in front of a computer, he enjoys his weekends landscaping and the outdoors in general.

Stephen Vincent Mather

Stephen Vincent Mather has worked in the geospatial industry for 15 years, having always had a flair for geospatial analyses in general, especially those at the intersection of Geography and Ecology. His work in opensource geospatial databases started 5 years ago with PostGIS and he immediately began using PostGIS as an analytic tool, attempting a range of innovative and sometimes bleedingedge techniques (although he admittedly prefers the cutting edge). His geospatial career has spanned a variety of interesting and novel naturalresource projects, everything from the movement of ice sheets in Antarctica to hiking viewsheds and mobile trail applications to help park users find trails, picnic areas, and restrooms. Stephen is currently the GIS manager for Cleveland Metroparks in Cleveland, Ohio. He manages a small geospatial shop that specializes in highend cartography, crating and generating data, geospatial web development, and analyses for naturalresource management, largely with opensource software. Stephen is also a Mennonite technologist, aka a strawhat hacker, interested in creating fair and open data and infrastructure for better governance and humanitarian purposes. Stephen is heavily involved in the Cleveland Civic Hacking movement as he works with the public to help them get engaged with geospatial data. In his spare time, he builds guitars really, really slowly.

Bborie Park

Bborie Park has been breaking (and subsequently fixing) computers for most of his life. His primary interests involve developing endtoend pipelines for spatial datasets. He is an active contributor to the PostGIS project and is a member of the PostGIS Steering Committee. He happily resides with his wife Nicole in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Good collection of recipes but aimed more at the intermediate user of PostGIS

In recent years, Postgres has been gaining ground over MySQL as the open source relational database (RDBMS) of choice, and is now arguably the open source RDBMS of choice. One of the reasons for this gain is the geospatial support provided by the PostGIS extensions. Although recent versions of MySQL do provide some geospatial support, these are very limited when compared to PostGres or a commercial database (e.g. Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server). PostGIS is supported by a wide range
of geospatial tools and systems, including most, if not all, of the major open source geospatial projects.

The PostGIS Cookbook follows the familiar Packt cookbook formula of: Introduction, Getting Ready, How to do it,
and How it works. However, few of the recipes include a "Further Information" or "Taking it Further" section. Unlike many of these cookbooks, the PostGIS Cookbook is not a beginner's tutorial that assumes minimal knowledge. Although some of the recipes cover relatively simple tasks such as importing OpenStreetMaps (OSM) data, many are much more sophisticated. Also there is not a step-by-step progression that builds knowledge in a tutorial-like manner. This is not necessarily a bad thing - it makes the book more of a genuine 'cookbook', i.e. collection of recipes that solve typical real world problems.

This does mean the book is not ideal for novices. It also assumes the reader is already familiar with Postgres. Although it introduces and explains a lot of PostGIS functionality, if the reader is not already familiar with the basics of PostGIS, they will also benefit from having access to a tutorial or reference (e.g. the official documentation).

The recipes cover a wide range of data types and sources. These should help users who are looking to import their specific data type. Recipes also reference other systems which can work well with PostGIS, such as Quantum GIS and GRASS. These references barely scratch the surface of what these systems can do, but they may be enough to inform the reader who can then go and research them further.

- Moving Data In and Out of PostGIS: CSV, GDAL, shapefiles, OSM, rasters
- Structures: Geospatial views, triggers, inheritance, normaization, proportional polygon estimates
- Vectors - Basic: GPS data, fixing geometries, simplifications, distances, intersections, clipping, etc
- Vectors - Advanced: Efficient proximity filtering, rotations, translations, scaling, Voronoi polygons
- Rasters: Map algebra, geometetry conversion, warping & resampling, Digital Elevation Models (DEM), Visualising
- pgRouting: Loading data, Dijkstra, A*, service areas, polygon centerlines
- Nth dimension: 3d objects, LIDAR, X3D, UAV photogrammetry
- PostGIS Programming: Psycopg (Python Postgres library), OGR Python bindings, PL/Python, Geocoding (GeoNames, OSM, geopy, PL/Python), netCDF
- PostGIS and the web: UMN MapServer, GeoServer, OpenLayers, Leaflet, GeoDjango
- Maintenance, Optimization, and Performance Tuning: Backups, indexes, clustering, SQL optimization, migration

I know the pgRouting chapter would have been useful if I had had it a couple of years ago when using PostGIS to
batch calculate route distances.

Summarizing, this book is recommended for PostGIS practitioners. PostGIS novices will find it demonstrates a
sophisticated set of functionality, but they will also need a PostGIS tutorial and/or reference.

Good book but hard to find the course materials

I just purchased this ebook for Kindle and have read through the first few chapters. It seems very informative and I like it so far. However, when I tried to download the associated sample data to work through some of the activities, I'm having a really hard time finding it somewhere. I've searched all over the internet and the publisher website without much luck. The publisher's website appears to have a search tool for this, but it does not seem to work. I did find one github link (https://github.com/smathermather/postgis-cookbook-data) with sample data but it only contains sample data from one of the authors (chapters 2,4,6,and 7). Some of the external data source links referenced in the book link to sources that aren't clear where to download the data from (either the site has changed or there aren't clear instructions on how to get a data export from that source).

Because of this issue, I'm giving this book a three star review. However, I might update this if this issue is clarified. As I mentioned, I like the book so far and would really like to work through some of the exercises with the sample data. I don't understand why these resources are so difficult to find, given that this book is centered around the exercises.

Great cookbook for intermediate to advanced users

I started reading the PostGIS Cookbook with high expectations. Nonetheless, I was positively surprised by the quality of the book, especially regarding its reread value. Skimming through the book once will give you a good idea of what PostGIS is capable of, and it inspired me to move some important parts of automated postprocessing workflows into the database. Keeping the book around will help you put together projects more quickly and efficiently.

The book is composed of several recipes, all of which are fairly concise. You should have a bit of background working with geodata and be fairly comfortable with reading SQL in order to get the most out of it, because theoretical explanations are kept to a minimum. This is great for users at or above the intermediate level, because it's a perfect format for quickly looking up practical examples of how certain things are done without having to dig a lot. If you're looking to move from beginner to intermediate user, the examples also will help you a lot.

The chapters cover a broad variety of topics, from importing and exporting data to simple raster and vector analyses. Math algebra, terrain analyses, routing and photogrammetry are covered well, as well as serving the data locally or over a web connection and displaying it in a desktop GIS or a self-made web client. There are also some nice examples and explanations of how to administer, maintain and optimize the database itself, as well as analyzing and optimizing the performance of single queries using Postgres' built in profiler. It's helpful for the more advanced topics if you bring some prior knowledge with, but if you're just getting started in these areas the book contains good tips on where you can find further information. The focus is on practicability and presenting examples that are easy to understand, duplicate, and adapt to your own needs.

The only thing that I wish were done better is the code formating. I read the ebook version and in some chapters code blocks were missing line breaks. In the SQL this makes it hard to read, especially because no space was substituted for line breaks, which broke the syntax, but for the Python examples this was even worse because the indentation is semantically significant.
Aside from the formating problem, I was extremely pleased with the PostGIS Cookbook and will surely use it in the future often while migrating analysis steps and data storage into a Postgres/PostGIS database.
