Once again, Dozois serves up a pleasurable mix of established luminaries as well as the newer stars of the SF realm. In Dan Simmons's "Looking for Kelly Dahl," an elementary school teacher journeys from despair to love with a former student who has the ability to teleport to parallel earths where dinosaurs never fell, no one else exists or the 1970s never ended. Maureen McHugh also offers a tale of redemption in an alternate Civil War era, but this time, the underground railroad rescues white former slave owners who have relocated by the thousands to die of exposure on the frontier. In the tradition of the best SF, Geoff Ryman explores homelessness in a credibly violent future where beggars are routinely crucified by hungry mobs. Fans will especially appreciate Dozois's introduction of talented young writers who have yet to publish their own collections or novels. Notable among these is David Murasek, whose novella, "We Were Out of Our Minds with Joy," imagines the couple of the next century almost having it all?that is, until they are issued a permit to have a child. But the truth is that all of the 24 short stories or novellas are rewarding, which is really the most outstanding feature of this collection.

This year's offering features the usual balance of veterans, such as grand masters Ursula LeGuin and Poul Anderson, and newcomers--William Sanders and David Marusek, for instance. The generous selection includes diverse themes and writing styles, ranging from nostalgia in Terry Bisson's tale of three friends' return to a rejuvenating childhood shrine to rigorous hard sf in Greg Egan's tale about a computer that turns lethal when programmed to test an "impossible" theorem. Dozois introduces each entry with a brief biography of its author and concludes the volume with a very long list of honorably mentioned stories. I don't know what happened here, but most of these other reviews are for the wrong book. Only the three oldest reviews are for the right edition. The is for the right one(#13) but the Editorial Review by Amazon.com is for #17 as are 15 out of 20 of the Reader Reviews.

There's some others which are really good (STARSHIP DAY comes to mind) and a few stinkers (Rosenblum's 'choppy' prose comes to mind), but when gathering 24 stories from any given year that is bound to happen.

Oddly there are no Nebula Award winners in this edition.

#13(1995) is perhaps the best of all of Gardner's Annuals. A recent discussion at the Asimov's Magazine website, which Gardner was still editing at the time, found most people liking #13 the best. It's odd to find a decade's best stories being those from mid-decade, it's always been the earlier or later years which defined any other decade. In that discussion over at Asimov's #12(1994) and #14(1996) were the other most popular of the Annuals, so that further illustrates just how good the short SF of the mid-nineties was.

I buy one of these big daddies every year and can never wait to start in on Gardner's Annual Summation. In fact, Spouse has to drive home because I can't wait until we get home to start reading. I GOTTA READ IT NOW! The Summation alone is ALMOST worth the price, I say "almost" because these puppies aren't cheap when they're hot off the presses. But, you now have the opportunity to buy these bad boys cheap.

If you're a student of SF this book is an absolute must. You get samples of everything going on in the genre AND that very in-depth Summation.

If you're simply a fan this book really isn't a must because there are stories which some people would hardly consider as being Science Fiction, but there's always that Summation. The Hartwell SF Annuals are probably more to your liking as far as being strictly SF. But then again, this particular edition doesn't have much of that "fluffy" stuff as compared to many of the other editions.

It's a great collection of stories. Buy it, you'll spend a lot less than I did.

A great colection!!!

They've said what I wanted to about the stories themselves. I'm odd for younger readers in that I was reading Cordwainer Smith before I'd heard of Card or Bujold. This was therefore a great way to introduce me to great "new" authors like McHugh, Kress, MacLeod, etc. The summations are a great way to see what's going on in the science fiction, & sadly I think magazines may be in worse shape than Dozois indicates. I think he doesn't want to say how bad things are because he doesn't want pity subscriptions. I hope Amazon allows me to mention that some of the Kansas guy's favorite stories are by Poul Anderson & that he meant to say "most loved & most hated" not "most & most hated". If they refuse to print this because I mentioned that then this will be the last time I visit this site! I hate to be melodramatic like that, but I think this Customer Comment thing is a great way to talk about books & I'd hate for a flub to ruin someone's point. Sadly that small digression's probably killed the chance this will appear so to continue I'd like to say Hartwell's is a great complement to this & you should try it too. It's not quite as good, but it has a lot of short humorous work that Dozois tends to lack. I understand Dozois preference for novellas, but it's nice to have a collection of shorter work when you're too busy for novellas. The summary that Dozois has is one of his (Dozois') main advantages since it points you to good books & anthologies you may have missed & tells you about older generation authors that even I'm not familiar with. I said the others said everything about the stories, but I realize that's not quite true. Dozois chooses much more hard sf then people give him credit for. Granted "Elvis Bearpaw's Luck" is basically a darkly humorous Cherokeeized sendup of Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" & like Swanwick's "Radio Waves" it's fantasy with sf elements, but so are some of Hartwell's choices. "Wang's Carpet" was hard sf, but felt incomplete & is now part of Diaspora where it probably makes more sense. His other story "Luminous" stands on its own. I liked "Starship Day" by MacLeod, but if I say much about it I'll ruin it. Well I hope amazon will forgive my minor digression & I hope you science fiction fans will keep sf magazines alive so anthologies like this will have a variety of stories to choose, but I won't hold my breath.

A great collection of stories.

Although I did not enjoy every story, I respected them. Meaning the ones I did not like I am sure someone else would. The ones I liked best were "Think Like a Dinosaur", "The Lincoln Train", "Genesis", & "Feigenbaum's Number". Although I'd like to say the title character in "Looking for Kelly Dahl" is quite interesting & memorable. "Think Like a Dinosaur" is good for people who liked the idea in Tom Godwin "The Cold Equation's", but thought it was sappy. It also has interesting aliens. "The Lincoln Train" introduced me to Maureen F. McHugh (which is a mixed blessing), still it's a good Alternate History story vividly written. Poul Anderson has written some of my most & most hated novels. Still "Genesis" is an interesting far future tale. My favorite part is more alternate history involved. "Feigenbaum's number" introduced me to Nancy Kress (mostly a good thing) it mixes math & Platonism. These stories (especially the Kress) are more emotional then I am used to sf being. Still it is a fairly varied mixture that even contains some hard sf. My only complaint is that he could have chosen less confusing stories that were under ten pages. (or just not included stories that short since he obviously doesn't like them that short)

I received a free copy of Experience the Impossible by Bill Johnson through the Chosen Blogger Review program from Baker Publishing group. I've loved every book that Bill Johnson has written and this one wasn't any different. Unlike his other books though, the chapter setup is more like that of a devotional. I think to really get the most out of this book, it should be read a chapter a day. Each chapter explores some aspect of our identity and calling as Heaven's ambassadors. He writes that faith, hope and love in the presence of God are the keys to experiencing and unleashing the impossible on earth. I loved that each chapter ends with a prayer and confession to activate your faith and awareness of your identity. The revelations in this book are so deep and potentially life changing for those who are willing to take the time to really meditate on the contents of each chapter.
The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that some of the chapters are a little repetitive but that's it! Overall I think this book is a great investment for anyone looking to grow their faith and be used more by God.

Impossibly wonderful!

This is a book to love. There are so many wonderful, inspirational, comforting messages in this book that readers will be tempted to devour it, reading straight through. The concepts will be better appreciated, however, if readers take the time to read and reflect on the meaning of each chapter and read the prayer and confession found at the end of each one. We have the power of heaven that can change any situation and overcome every problem, if we are open to communication with the Holy Spirit.

Author Bill Johnson shows how to access this divine power through the Holy Spirit--and how the Spirit will provide you with the three gifts: faith, hope and love. Each chapter explains how to develop and use these gifts. Johnson’s ‘simple, practical ideas about these three aspects of Jesus' grace that will not only transform the way you think, act and love, but will transform the very atmosphere around you--and will unleash heaven's power in your world.’

Each chapter holds a beautiful treasure that deserves the time to appreciate it before reading on to the next. The Holy Spirit is real and alive in each one of us. Let us answer and be ready to do His work for God’s glory.

hope and love. It's a book I would recommend to anyone ...

I used to be one of those people who thought Bill Johnson and all of the people associated with Bethel were crazy...however, after a few personal experiences blew the lid off the box of my safe, explainable, conservative theology and I had no way to explain them, I found myself reading When Heaven Invades Earth and listening to Bill Johnson sermons. This book is a spectacular book with a foundation on the three things that will last forever: faith, hope and love. It's a book I would recommend to anyone wanting to experience more in their relationship with Jesus and have their paradigms shift. This book is full of foundational truths from scripture that will equip anyone to be a partner with the story God is writing in the world in this season!

Good reading material

I'm planning to go to Japan in the next year or two, so I ordered this book hoping that it would give me some insight to how the Japanese culture really is. This book is on the thin side, but gives you quite a bit of information. To me, I feel that this is a great, but not inclusive resource for those of you who want to learn more about how the people of Japan are.

I borrowed this from the library for an upcoming job transfer to Japan. I proceeded to buy it just to have my own copy! Everything is clearly organized, easy to understand and it relays all the important information with a light background and application. The only way it could be better is if it had pictures, but that would add bulk!

this book is very easy to read and i like it as an introduction to the japanese culture. it should probably be followed up with a more thorough language reference book, but it is a good first read.

When you are in need of healing, there is nothing more rewarding than picking up compilations of healing scriptures that fit your specific needs. For years, I would search the web, thumb through the concordance and a wide ranges of books containing healing prayers and topical scripture lists.

In his book, God’s Healing Scriptures: The Promise and Examples of Healing in the Bible, author Akili Kumasi introduces readers to a unique compilation and organization of healing scriptures and instructions that will complement, enhance or even replace your existing study methods and meditation.

The overall premise of the book is simple, “God is YOUR healer. God is THE healer.” Through the first few pages of the book, Kumasi lays a foundation concerning the necessity of studying God’s word as it relates to healing in the Old & New Testaments. This is very helpful for those who have limited understanding of healing or who may have been taught that healing is not relevant for today.

God’s Healing Scriptures: The Promise and Examples of Healing in the Bible is compiled in a way that:

(1) Introduces readers to God’s healing promises. Kumasi introduces the concept of healing simply by expounding on one key passage of scripture from Exodus 15:16 which says, “…I am the God that healeth thee.” The study builds on this foundation the foundation for the remainder of the book. Here, readers will discover a treasure trove of scriptures organized from the Old Testament and then the New Testament.

(2) Shares numerous scriptural examples of biblical healings. Kumasi combs through the bible and extensively details testimonies of divine healings again from the Old and New Testaments. In my opinion, the most unique component of this book is that it includes so many biblical examples of God’s healing power not just a list of uncategorized scriptures and techniques on prayer and study. A new believer as well as a seasoned one would find value between these pages. In addition, this book will also save a diligent student hours in research on this subject.

Great read! Very encouraging!

This book is very insightful! I was highly encouraged and reminded that so many people suffer today and even back before Jesus was alive, whether it is with physical ailments, or mental troubles. This encouraged me because I know that I am not alone when I suffer. Most of the time we do not know why we suffer, and we are always looking for a reason. What I think most people want is a definitive answer, when in reality, if we do not "see" an answer to our prayers, we think God wasn't listening or prayer didn't work. This book is full of insight as to why this happens. It has encouraged me to be a better person and realize that I cannot just sit and wait for something to happen. Things will happen, but I still need to work. I need to do things, even if they are little; nothing happens when we just sit around and wait.

Today, most people think the only way to be healed is to use medication and synthetic treatments. What I mean is anything that did not come from nature in which God created. Even when God healed through Jesus, people saw and still did not believe. They still thought that healing had to be done a different way. This book gives great insight into many different Bible verses about such healing, some of which I would have never read on my own and some which I have heard before. Even with the verses I knew, reading them again in this book has encouraged me to be a better believer.

And there are many things that talk about people being risen from the dead. Such as page 69 - 70 referring to II Kings 13:14, 21 about a dead man revived in Elisha's Tomb. As you see it wasn't just Lazarus being risen from the dead that most people hear about. Or even about Job on page 75 who was very troubled because bad things kept happening to him as he lost his friends and family. Job was faithful and even prayed for his friends and was restored himself.

It's a great read! I really encourage others to get a copy!

Most certainly not, for God can and does do what man calls impossible. What a great book that has been written with the healing scriptures put together in a concise manner. We all need to study God's Word and learn life's lessons. This book is very valuable in today's world and a welcomed addition to your library. Because God never changes. He was the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I really enjoyed you book and look forward to more in the future.
