This book has been produced not for academics but for anyone wishing to identify the most commonly seen trees in Cuba, whether they be in the city, beside the road, on the beach or in other parts of the island. There are well over 800 species of tree growing on the island, thus this volume presents only a sample of the enormous arboreal variety to be found in Cuba and around twenty of these trees have such beautiful flowers that they are frequently planted for ornamental purposes and thus also appear in the companion volume, Flowers of Cuba. The reader will find both native and cultivated species, which have been balanced to present an objective guide.

Almost a great book
By Porgy
This is a very good introduction to the trees of Cuba Two photos per tree, one close up of leaves or trunk, and one showing entire tree, and the information is good too. Precise descriptions on leaves, flowering times, tree habit and most importantly in the comments section, a history of the tree and where it is mostly commonly found plus an interesting anecdotes about it. Unfortunately the organisation is terrible. All the trees are listed in alphabetical order according to their Spanish names (the book also includes other common names, and its Latin binominal). So it is very difficult to identify any tree without leafing (pun intended) through the book trying to use photos to match up - especially difficult with trees that look superficially alike. I did not succeed and left Cuba not being sure that I identified any tree correctly. If only there had been some other method of organisation (by leaf type, for example) and this book would have been a joy to use and incredibly helpful. It is just the right size to pack in a backpack which I did while travelling in Cuba. I would recommend this book for all the information in it. But it is like having a jewel without a proper setting. (The same goes for its companion book - Flowers of Cuba).

Written by a gifted Cuban botanist who heads the Botanical Gardens in Havana, Cuba. I visited the island in 2008 and had an opportunity to spend a day with Dr. Leiva at the botanical garden and was incredibly impressed by the beauty of the grounds which is spread out in regions by continents. I met Dr. Leiva during my visit and had the unique pleasure of touring the grounds with her. She has traveled the world at the invitation of numerous countries including the United States to share her knowledge and is recognized as the world's expert on palms.
Dr. Leiva has also written "Flowers of Cuba" which is one of the most beautiful books of flowers I have ever had the pleasure of reading. She has headed of the World's Society of Botanical Gardens numerous times in her career.
These are must have books for any nature lover as the content is accurate and the pictures incredible! I highly recommend these most beautiful books and hoping Dr. Leiva finds the time to write a few more books.
