One word sums my opinion about this book- awesome! I currently own this one and the course companion by Andrew Allott and I have to say this book is so much better. The first thing I like about this book is that the diagrams are in colour... Secondly, when explaining a process, the book gives both a flow diagram of the process and sentence descriptions. I find that this enhances my understanding of everything so much more. -- Student, IB Damned site 20100304 This is the my favourite Biology book which I have come across so far. There is masses of information that is all very useful and easy enough to understand... Diagrams in the book are also very helpful for helping to explain some trickier things like The Krebs Cycle. Every time I pick up a new book on Power Electronics, I go to the chapters on feedback and semiconductor theory to see if the author is presenting factual information or, just repeating myths from older books. Under figure 2.3 is a common myth about diode reverse recovery, that recombination of minority carriers waits until the lead current is negative before initiation of charge removal.
No. This is grossly incorrect. Minority charges recombine (limited by the transit time) when the forward current starts to fall. It does not "wait" until the total current goes negative. By the time the total current reaches zero, most of the minority charges may or may not have been already swept out, depending on the negative slope, and thus the time it takes to reach 0 amps.

Needs more images!

While it is illustrated, it needs about six times more pictures than it has. The concept of masks is best communicated visually and in color.
The Kindle format permits this to a much greater degree than a printed book: Ms. Bell has not taken as much advantage of this as she could.

You may also enjoy "Masks" by W.T. Benda (1944, 1945), though it is out of print and somewhat rare and expensive. I was surprised Ms. Bell made no mention of Benda in her work.

I may have more to say in the future.

A constant theme here is that 'this works better than that' for practical reasons not for underlying theoretical ...

This is, to invoke a technical reviewer cliché, a 'valuable' book. Read it and you will have a detailed and sophisticated practical understanding of the state of the art in neural networks technology. Interestingly, I also suspect it will remain current for a long time, because reading it I came to more and more of an impression that neural network technology (at least in the current iteration) is plateauing.

Why? Because this book also makes very clear - is completely honest - that neural networks are a 'folk' technology (though they do not use those words): Neural networks work (in fact they work unbelievably well - at least, as Geoffrey Hinton himself has remarked, given unbelievably powerful computers), but the underlying theory is very limited and there is no reason to think that it will become less limited, and the lack of a theory means that there is no convincing 'gradient', to use an appropriate metaphor, for future development. A constant theme here is that 'this works better than that' for practical reasons not for underlying theoretical reasons. Neural networks are engineering, they are not applied mathematics, and this is very much, and very effectively, an engineer's book.

Steven D. Benson has been in the precision sheet metal trade for more than 20 years. Currently, he oversees the press brake operation for Neilsen Metal Industries of Salem, Oregon. He also teaches basic, intermediate, and advanced courses on press brakes for the Oregon Advanced Technology Consortium. He has produced three levels of textbooks to accompany the courses.
