The Portland, Oregon based Pander Brothers are a multi disciplinary creative media team who write and direct films, commercials and music videos as well as write and illustrate graphic novels. Awesome

How far would you go to keep your love alive?
Girlfiend is the newest works from the Pander Brothers in a decade and they definitely have not lost their touch. Jacob and Arnold Pander have created an immersive and vivid world, telling the story of the main character Karina, and her complicated life. (except that she's technically dead..) At times the artwork reminds me of Jhonen Vasquez at some points, but at other times the art style leans towards Japanese manga. This book is definitely not text heavy, and relies more so on the black and white, high contrast, artwork to tell a lot of the story, and it's pretty awesome in a really bloody kind of way.
Karina is a beautiful albeit slightly strange vampire, that you can't help but love. She's not just your run of the mill vamp, however, but an "evolved" rare breed of vampire she refers to as "Daywalkers". The story follows the crazy romance between Karina and Nick. I found their relationship endearing if not a bit awkward at first. At first Karina has an almost innocent air about her, which is accentuated by the stuffed animal she sleeps with at night. Karina's need for blood gives Nick an idea, turning them into a twisted kind of vigilantes, picking off the dreaded Blood Brothers gang that has been wreaking havoc in the city. She needs to feed, so why not take out some baddies in the process? I enjoyed the mystery behind Karina and her past and the fact that she has a conscience and hates herself for what she is, from calling herself a monster repeatedly, to not wanting Nick to see her feed, fearing he too will see her as a monster. Nick, however, sees past the fact that she is a vampire, doing whatever it takes to be with her.
I found the first chapter to be a little jumpy, and at times I was slightly confused, but after the first chapter all of the separate story lines begin to intertwine into one bloody tale of love, murder, and revenge. The story line from page one is great, but once all of the separate stories start to converge things get intense. I enjoyed how the cowboy vampire trio ended up being the final piece in connecting all of the characters together.
Girlfiend is one of the best horror comics I have read in a long time and I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. The book is released on April 1 from Dark Horse comics and I highly recommend picking up a copy.

Fun, Sexy, and a Visually Stunning!

I rarely read a trade paperback all the way through in one sitting. When I read a story for the first time I like to consume only one or two chapters a day to lengthen the time I have to enjoy the book. I couldn’t do that with “Girlfiend”. I wanted to gorge myself on this one.
My first experience with the Pander Bros. work was in the 1980s Grendel series. Their art was such a stand out from everything else going on in comics. For me it was the first indication of how far comics can grow in writing and art. “Girlfiend” continues to push the industry. I have been reading comics for over 40 years and to find artists who can grab you for decades is a rare and wonderful treat. The Pander Bros. have a kinetic energy in their work and have honed their craft to a razor’s edge in “Girlfiend”. Buy it, read it, and you will love it.

Decent story suffering from incomprehensible over-inked art.

Solid story about a goth guy who falls in love with a vampire. I like the Pander Brothers art normally but this thing really suffers from being over-inked. It made it really hard to tell the male characters apart since about half of them had the same hair cut. They also tried this reverse negative thing and they might as well have just painted those panels black. I couldn't distinguish what was going on when they used this effect. The story does take some strange leaps. At the end of the first issue Karina has run off into an alleyway. At the beginning of the next issue, she's climbing into bed with Nick. I had to go back and make sure I didn't skip any pages.

I want to give a 5 star rating, but ...

I want to give a 5 star rating, but I honestly cannot. Why? I have been crocheting for 40 years and I don't think the directions are clear. I've found that at the end of rounds when you are supposed to turn, it doesn't tell you to. The diagrams are confusing. I will, however, continue on working through the book. If I find the other heads are more clear (I am currently working on on the hare), I will repost.

Not for beginners but the finished products are awesome.

If I reviewed it solely on how much I love the concept and the outcome of my projects, I would want to give it 10 stars if I could. I love the projects I have made. I started with the mouse head, it took me only a few hours to complete. Then I moved on to the lion head, it took me a few weeks because I didn't work on it every hour of every day. They both turned out wonderful. The book has beautiful pictures and a great concept for crochet designs.

Now the reason for the 3 stars. The book is written in UK terms, with no indication that they are UK terms. I figured it out by comparing the photos and the written pattern. If you are going to sell a product in the US, please make sure you indicate that the terms are not in US. Once I figured that out, I was good to go. It's easy to find the conversion online of what the UK term means in US terms if you do not already know. Next, like other reviewers have mentioned, the patterns are not concise and clear. I had to go between the written pattern and the diagram. If you do not know how to read crochet charts, this will be a tough book for you. There are steps in the book that are unclear, I had to frog 10 rows on my Lion because I realized I was doing it wrong. The whole pattern of putting the head together had instructions, however when it came to final assembly, it was basically, figure it out on your own. This book does not have detailed instructions on placement, how and where to attach hair, eyes, nose - shaping of features, it's all very basic instructions and then you are on your own. There are also a lot of references to other patterns so you are jumping around in the book a lot. For example, use this part of the Ram pattern to start the Zebra pattern. It would have been just as easy for them to just reprint it, like they were trying to save ink instead of making you go all over the book just to make one pattern - but that is a pet peeve of mine.

Overall, I love the outcome of the 2 I have made so far, I will continue to make patterns from the book. If the others I make are easier, I may re-assess my 3 star rating. However, I believe the mouse is the easiest in the book and the Lion is probably one of the hardest so I have experienced both ends of the spectrum. I would recommend this book to experienced crocheters. It takes time, and patience for the final product but it is very worth it.

Not as described..

The synopsis for this graphic novel is completely wrong. The actual heroine and hero aren't Whitney and Sloane, they're Kris and Jared. And of course, it's a different story. I purchased this because I got curious after reading the description so I'm a bit disappointed and am left wondering what the title of that novel really is. I've decided to keep this purchase though because it turned out to be another good story. Anyway, I hope they change the description of this title pronto. Most readers aren't as forgiving as I am.

The misunderstood Alter Ego series (part 2)

Having previously reviewed the first book of the Alter Ego universe, the time seemed apt to do the second text a bit of justice by explaining my understanding of what its merits (and detriments) happen to be, what it tries to achieve, and finally, what are some alternative resources you can try if you are unsatisfied with this particular item for self-study (I find this to be the biggest/most common criticism of the series).

Alter Ego is not designed for self study. Period. If you are interested in learning French in an auto-didactic fashion, you are simply wasting your time (and money) by purchasing this item. This is the current textbook for the Alliance Francaise, a language-school located throughout the world. The material in the book is going to appear absolutely bonkers if you don't have an experienced, native, fluent professor guiding your through the various chapters. I strongly disagree with the statement that the book is rather randomly strewn together - in reality, there is a surprising amount of structure and logic to the way in which the material is assembled, but I will agree that it is unconventional, especially if your frame of reference is something like a conventional grammar exercise workbook or course textbook.

Each "lesson" covers a specific topic - the topic is then supplemented by a lot of different types of images, passages, quotes, posters, etc. that deal in some way with the subject matter. Generally speaking, the book is designed to stimulate interaction/provide discussion material, while working on the core competencies of any language - reading, writing, speaking, oral comprehension and grammatical understanding. This is why the book comes with a CD - it is for the listening exercises, which are designed to enrich your vocabulary and test your capacity for understanding native speakers in conversations of progressive complexity. Are you going to encounter words during this process that you are not going to find useful? Absolutely - the beautiful thing about language, any language, is that every person utilizing it has a unique way of speaking; we all have phrases and linguistic tendencies - certain words simply will not form a part of your vocabulary because they will not resonate with your personality. This holds true for native English speakers, I think it would be ridiculous if it didn't apply to anyone in their French studies.

In all honesty, the GENERAL setup/layout/structure of AlterEgo 2 is identical to AlterEgo 1. The BIG difference between the two books is this - the material that you have to read and work with is more complex. The grammar that you are going to learn is MUCH more complex. The A2 level that this book covers is quite challenging, and it also tends to be where a lot of people quit the program (I am not the owner of this insight, my professor at the time pointed this out). Things like the subjective, conditional, future, future anterior, plus-que-parfait, etc are all introduced and worked on heavily here (if I recall correctly). Are there a lot of "pictures" in this book? Sure, that's a valid criticism. In my experience, after spending an hour on conjugations and verb tenses that at times seemed overwhelming, an image and some discussion was, quite frankly, a welcomed relief.

Finally, let's talk about some items you can try if you are interested in self study; to reiterate, do not buy this book if this is your objective. It has nothing to do with your intelligence or your looks (scientifically speaking, 100% of people who like this review have been found to be incredibly intelligent and strikingly attractive, but I digress) - the book is just not designed for that sort of thing; it's THAT simple. You can find great exercises via "Study Shack" a Google Chrome application. There are a number of webcasts from "imagiers" which are phenomenally clear, articulate, and useful (the organization has posted 200,000+ of these, they seem to have everything covered). If you want to listen to podcasts, simply search Europe 1 or RTL, they have tons of audio programs on their websites which are free to stream anywhere in the world. I really like "Practice Makes Perfect" workbooks, I find that they are great for solidifying concepts, especially if you learn well through a lot of written exercises (Complete French Grammar is outstanding). There is also "French Verb Workbook", a great resource if you want to understand how some of the more complex French verb tenses actually translate into English.

To summarize, the book is fantastic but targets a very specific audience. Unless you are working with a tutor/prof who requests that you buy it, I would suggest that you try some other resource for self-study; that however should not take away from the quality of the material that the authors have produced.

Not the best way to learn a language

Frankly, this is a terrible book. The layout it confusing, the binding and paper is cheap, and the information is buried under a lot on nonsense graphics. I would not recommend it for a serious language student, *particularly not* for someone who may be trying to learn on their own.

A great example of how not to write a language guide

I wish I could think of something nice to say, but there really is only one word I could think of to describe this book: awful. It really is a perfect example of how not to write a language-learning book. I had the chance to use the book as a textbook for a third semester French textbook at a large American university.

The most glaring issue is one that permeates the book. The book completely lacks organization. There is none, at all. Each and every page consists of a number of silly, irrelevant images (pictures of celebrities, stock images representing any number of scenes, posters for would-be community events, etc). An average page will be anywhere from 50 to 65% pictures and a number of questions about the images. Content, and by that I mean the grammatical lessons that we've bought this book to learn, are shoved into a box in the corner on every third or fourth page.

This could be overcome, but the general format of the book makes that difficult. Although each "Dossier" is focused around a specific topic (Travail, Voyages, Média, Internet, etc), the actual "learning" does very little to focus on that concept. Consider, for example, the vocabulary for one randomly chosen topic (copied from the back of the book, from the actual "text" it's difficult if not impossible to decipher what words are vocab, versus what is not--to bold or italicized text to cue that, although bold text and italics are used liberally in the text): to plan, to water, to shine, noisy, (stair) well, manager of an apartment building, friendliness, coownership, house warming party, exchange, finally, to bloom, escape, guard, building, initiative, municipality, and on and on it goes. That's half the vocab from a single section, and the lack of focus demonstrated there doesn't vary terribly much in the book.

Maybe this book might be better in a different setting. It's clearly written for new immigrants to France, where a class might have a dozen different language backgrounds. It might be a better book if one was getting constant exposure to the language. Unfortunately, for any situation short of that this book is solely a confusing labyrinth to navigate and an all-around frustrating experience. If you have any choice in the matter, do not buy this book!

Sexy, intense, and LOL-worthy!

The Outlaw Triplets.

These guys are fangirl-worthy and panty-drop sexy. Not only do they melt my heart and heat my insides, but they also crack me the hell up. When more than one of them is in a scene, it's a damn riot! The brotherly banter is side-splittingly funny and so freaking adorable and endearing. The dynamic between them is something I haven't seen in the New Adult Genre yet, and I love it. I love them. I have this bittersweet feeling about the series. Two triplets down, just one more to go. Oh man, I never want it to end. Dearest Zoe, Can we clone them? Yeah... let's do that! ;)

At the mention of New Adult, I have to say that I am right up there with the folks who feel the genre is getting insane and out of control. I love the genre, but with massive hoards of books coming out within it each week, that makes it all the more difficult to find a really amazing story. They all start to look the same. And let's be honest... a lot of them kind of are the same. This is why I feel I have to shout it from the rooftops that Zoe Dawson has created a standout set of books. It's not one big thing—it's a dozen smaller things that make up this whole of greatness. The characters are livelier, the romance deeper, the plot line more interesting, the laughs more abundant. Everything about this book screams more to me.

It's clear from the beginning that Verity has a secret. It's clear that she believes Boone ruined her life. You expect a secret, but you will never expect the entire truth. Just as with the first book, Zoe blindsided me with a revelation. She pretty much knocked me on my ass! There I am, all content in my cozy reading chair, and WHAMMO! Secret unveiled! Now I have to wake up my poor poor husband so I can shout at someone about how I am so floored and so OMG surprised. ;) I wouldn't want to tell one of my bookish friends and spoil it, afterall! But let me just say this: you are going to need to pick your jaw up off the floor after reading this one.

If anyone has read my review of A Perfect Mess, you'll know how much I enjoyed the sex scenes. One reason for that is the fact that it was from the male's POV. This is one of the unique points I was talking about. I can honestly say, I can't remember even one other book where this was the case. I don't know about you, but I feel it's much more sexy to read from the guy's point of view. I love how raw an straightforward it makes things. I love the masculinity. Now, there are plenty of sexy times to see from Verity's POV as well, but my overall point is that the sex scenes are FANTASTIC. They're also perfectly spaced out and not overly done.

The romance is fast-paced, but I can tell you it works in this book. It's not insta-love, but it's insta-connection. Attraction, plus some. Verity and Boone have a whirlwind of a relationship. They are intense together. They don't do things half-assed. I really appreciated both of their journeys into self-awareness and into redemption. They each had thins to overcome and while on their own, couldn't quite seem to make it happen. Together? Done.

Needless to say, I definitely recommend this book. It was even better than the first, and I am still thinking about it well after finishing it. The characters are so well developed and so easy to connect with and love. The romance is sexy and very much passionate and intense. The plot is well written and definitely deeper and better thought out than a lot of other NA books. The Louisiana parish is the perfect setting. It's got a beauty about it and I really enjoyed the southern feel and the personality that came with it.

Trust me, this is a book you want to read. I recommend it 100%! Start with A Perfect Mess, then read this one (although this book could be read as a standalone). Now, Ms. Dawson, please bring on Braxton's story!

Beautiful story with a touching secret!

I loved this book. Boone and Verity have to overcome a major obstacle in order to pursue a chance at love, only to have a monumental secret threaten to tear it all down. I love Zoe Dawson's writing style and her humor, and hello... Outlaw boys! What's not to love. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
