Over and over and over again

I was looking for to a nice long read as I started this book. The first story was not bad, if you could get past the myriad of typos and word misuse. Also the vocabulary was barely on a middle school level. (Graphic subject matter not included). Then I started the second story. Hmmm three to one, that's a little different. But that's about all that was. The Sex scenes were basically the same, with one additional player. Some of the descriptions were almost word for word. And how weird is it for a character speaking in the first person to use phrases like "my big blue eyes" of "my firm, plump breasts with their hard nipples"? By the time I got to the third story I was just skipping thru looking for unique plot or story lines and went right past the Sex reruns. I guess, if you don't mind poor editing, and you want a brain vacation, reading anyone of these stories would be a great idea. I just wouldn't recommend reading them all at once. And if you want to read more then one, read the third story first, then the first story, since it's chronically the next set of events.

I have no idea how some books get so many stars. Are we reading the same book? First, this contains four stories - all exactly the same - just change the names and locations. The book was not editied. And if it was, get your money back, Ms. Faye. Just awful.

Heat without the skill

Honestly, from romance scenes that are almost literally copy pasted from book to book, down to the consistent typos. I like the idea, and the concept is hot, but these lack an editor and separate creativity. The characters are underdeveloped, the sex is cheap, and honestly, it's just not realistic or thorough

Cammuso's style is exaggerated but simple enough for young readers to follow

Artie King is your basic sixth-grade everyman who is just trying to get through life without getting into too much trouble. His buddies, Wayne and Percy, are at his side as he deals with his principal, the evil Mrs. Dagger, and a gang of bullies known as The Horde. Looking over it all is a kindly science teacher, Mr. Merlyn, and his pet crow, Oberon, who provide subtle and not-so-subtle guidance.

The story opens with an extended bit of slapstick involving a remote-controlled airplane, Oberon, a stray sandwich, one of the bullies, and a soft drink. This ends badly, with a bowling ball flying through Mrs. Dagger's windshield, and Wayne must come up with $300 to pay for a replacement.

By happy coincidence, the school is having a robot competition for its annual Dragon Day celebration, and the top prize is $300. The Horde traditionally wins by bullying one of the smart kids into building a robot for them. This year, that kid is Artie's friend Percy, but through an unlikely series of events, Artie and Wayne enter anyway.

Convinced that they can't build the robot themselves, they seek out a mysterious kid, Evo, who won the competition in a previous year. Evo provides them with the Rod of Doom, a universal remote that will shut down the other team's robot. It seems like a good idea until Artie realizes (with some gentle nudging from Mr. Merlyn) that this would be cheating. So Artie must make a choice: Cheat and win, or play it straight and risk losing.

Naturally, Artie makes the right choice, after a lively debate with his pals, and he and his smart friend Gwen cobble together a robot. In the end, the Horde's evil ways trip them up (secondary moral: Don't steal somebody else's Buffalo wings--they might be laced with hot sauce) and Artie and his friends carry the day.

Cammuso's style is exaggerated but simple enough for young readers to follow. Often a panel contains just a single element, allowing the readers to put them together in an almost cinematic fashion: We see a toy airplane plummeting through the air, we see the bully raising the cup to his lips, and we know what's going to happen next. There are no narrative text boxes at all, and conversations are simple and to the point. The writing is witty in a sixth-grade way without being crude or juvenile (well, mostly); Frankie and his friends talk like real kids, and the adults are more exaggerated, which fits a kid's-eye view pretty well.

This is the second book in the series; I hadn't read the first, The Dodgeball Chronicles, but I had no trouble following this story. There are some bits of backstory--Artie has a magic locker, for instance--but it's all pretty clear from context. And the magic is almost incidental to the story, providing a nudge in the right direction but not the solution to all problems--that comes from the kids themselves.

My 8 yr old son loved this series of books. He raved about them & even would sneak off to his room to keep reading. (We usually have to schedule time & insist that he read). Mr. Cammuso - please write more!!

Textbook Storytelling!!!

I happened upon this book at a local bookstore and just devoured it in 20 minutes. As a fledgling storyteller I found the structure of the set-ups and pay offs textbook...and that's a good thing!!! We get the theme of the entire book within a couple of pages and we later see how it encompasses the entire story. Some major comic titles think giving readers franchise characters with fancy costumes and over-the-top action will win them over. This is the best example of "less is more." Bravo Mr. Cammuso!

A FAMED CALVINIST PHILOSOPHER/APOLOGIST ANSWERS "THE PROBLEM OF EVIL"

Gordon Haddon Clark (1902-1985) was an American philosopher and Calvinist theologian, who was chairman of the Philosophy Department at Butler University for 28 years. He wrote many books, such as A Christian View of men and Things (A Treatise Showing that Social Stability Demands a Christian Society), , Thales to Dewey, An Introduction to Christian Philosophy, Religion, Reason and Revelation (Trinity Papers), God's Hammer: The Bible and Its Critics, etc. This booklet is actually chapter 5 of Clark's 'Religion, Reason and Revelation' book.

Clark argues that "Free will was put forward to relieve God of responsibility for sin. But this it does not do... if God merely permits men to be engulfed in sin of their own free wills, the original objections ... are not thereby met. This is what the Arminian fails to notice." (Pg. 17-18) He adds, "free will is not only futile but false. Certainly, if the Bible is the Word of God, free will is false; for the Bible consistently denies free will." (Pg. 19)

He quotes Georgia Harkness's Conflict in religious thought,, "But not many, even of the most rigorous of Calvinists, would now say that if a man gets drunk and shoots his family, it is the will of God that he should do so." But Clark then clearly states, "I wish very frankly and pointedly to assert that if a man gets drunk and shoots his family, it was the will of God that he should do so. The Scriptures leave no room for doubt... that it was God's will for Herod, Pilate, and the Jews to crucify Christ." (Pg. 34-35) He asserts that "Choice and necessity are therefore not incompatible... Choice then may be defined ... as a mental act that consciously initiates and determines a further action... A choice is still a deliberate volition even if it could not have been different." (Pg. 41)

He adds, "God is sovereign. Whatever he does is just, for this very reason: Because he does it. If he punishes a man, the man is justly punished; and hence the man is responsible." (Pg. 46) He states that God "cannot be responsible for the plain reason that there is no power superior to him; no greater being can hold him accountable... The sinner, therefore, and not God, is responsible; the sinner alone is the author of sin." (Pg. 54-55)

While many Christians will disagree with Clark's opinions and reasoning, this book is a very clear statement of his views.

One of the best books on the problem of evil.

One of the best solutions to the Problem of evil. In this book, he shows the inadequacy of the free will defence as a solution to the problem of evil, and presents a reformed explanation of this issue, as well as 4 reasons why God cannot be charged with evil in Calvinism. He correctly deals with the issue of human responsibility and demonstrates why human responsibility is not a product of free will, but a product of God's sovereignty and human knowledge of God's commandments. The book is very concise, yet has one of the best answers to the problem of evil. Clark demonstrates why only Calvinism can provide an answer to the problem of evil.

Very highly recommended.

I bought this book because I had writer's block while preparing for a Toastmaster's speech. I needed to intersperse some storytelling into a speech about attitudes. Well, along with hundreds of quotes, the book contains short stories and anectdotes on dozens of insightful subjects such as ability and attitude to winners and youth. You'll find openers, closers and materials for in-between. There are no prepared speeches, but there is plenty of information available to help develop and deliver a speech that will impact your audience.
Even if you do not have to prepare for a speech, the book provides inspiration. Reading the uplifting stories and quotes just makes for a better day.

What a gift Ladan Osman has given us with her debut collection The Kitchen Dweller’s Testimony. Ladan is both of and above this earth: her poems float above us as they make observations about the situations and life she lays out, as well as deal with the very tangible reality of living on this earth as a woman of color and immigrant. Her work is inquisitive, gently exploring the world around her. Her language is also full of play, teasing, joyful, blending both the divine and the secular.

This is a wonderful read, one that I would encourage all readers to explore.

HARD-HITTING WINNER

This first published book of poetry is a winner. Osman spins from revolting against harmful African rituals; to diatribes against relationships in name only; to deeply moving poems about race, displacement and colonialism; and does it all with a firm hand and a strong heart. Revelations abound in this thin volume; Osman is a master of language and pulls no punches—when she wants to punch, she hits hard. I couldn't put this work down, and was sorry when I reached the end.
